A Message from Elyse...

My name is Elyse Trevithick and I am the 2010 Parkhill Ambassador. Winning the ambassador competition was such an honour and made me very proud to be representing the Parkhill Agricultural Society. One of the earliest events that I attended was the District 13 Meeting in Shedden . The ambassadors came with their Fair President and other Fair board members. As an ambassador I had different activities to do than the other fair board members. We had ice breaker activities where we introduced ourselves to the other ambassadors of District 13. Our speaker was great! She taught us about proper diner etiquette along with how to walk and how we should generally present ourselves to others. One of the most memorable activities was when we had to make up a commercial aimed to younger children about agriculture and farming. The topic was pretty broad so there was a lot of room for creativity. She also brought props that we could use.

I had a lot of fun at that meeting and after that day our district of ambassadors made our own facebook group so we could communicate with each other about the upcoming convention that we would all be attending.
The OAAS Convention was held on the 17th of February and was concluded on the 19th. It was in Toronto in the Fairmount Royal York Hotel. Ambassadors from all over Ontario attended the convention. We took a 3 hour train to get to the convention, but some of the ambassadors had to fly to Toronto for the event. There were a total of 87 ambassadors and on the first day I met all of them. We started the convention with an icebreaker party that involved candy and a paper snowball fight. I tried my very best to remember everyone’s name, but learning 87 names in the span of an hour makes it difficult. That night was the formal night where all of the ambassadors dressed up and said their names and Agricultural society on stage in front of everyone. There was amazing entertainment after including a Tina Turner impersonator, four Gospel Tenors, a young country band called Rock Bottom and Chad Brownlee. All of the performers gave us the opportunity to meet them and get pictures. The next day we listened to speakers from Toronto Police who talked about domestic abuse. The 2010 CNE Ambassador, Erika Riddell spoke to us about her experiences this year and what we could expect for the CNE competition in August. We had a full tour of the Hotel. We saw the luxurious side which was the Royal Suite, where the Queen stays when she is in town and the not so luxurious side in the basement where they stored the hotel’s garbage and recycling. I obtained a whole new prospective of the hotel and how much work is involved every day to keep it functional after being on that tour. That night all of the Ambassadors and their Agriculture Society members dressed up in their best 50’s and 60’s costumes and went to the President’s Reception dance that was held in the Canadian room. The next day we listened to another speaker, Jennifer Daub who told us about her experience on the show “survive this”. There was a presentation for the congeniality award and after that everyone went to the Convention closing in the Canadian Room. The convention was one of the most fun weekends I have ever had. I met so many nice people and I am sure I will still be friends with some even after my title of Parkhill Ambassador is over.

The next and main upcoming event is the CNE Ambassador Competition that is happening in August. I am very excited to see all of the other ambassadors again! I am sure it will be here before I know it and I cannot wait!
